Is Sesame Chicken Gluten Free?

Is Sesame Chicken Gluten Free?

Sesame chicken is a classic that I can’t do without. While I was pregnant, I craved sesame chicken and molten cake a lot, and you know how it is. You may just wake up and decide to make some, but with a twist, add strawberries, or pair it with Lebanese vermicelli noodles. I know I tried over 50 variations, but is this savory, nutty-flavored sesame chicken gluten-free? Here is all we know.

What Is Sesame Chicken?

Sesame chicken is a famous Chinese dish with characteristic tender, crispy chicken pieces glazed in a savory sauce with sesame seeds sprinkled on top.

Traditionally, this dish is made by immersing chicken in a marinade of soy sauce, rice wine, and cornstarch, letting it sit for some hours in the fridge, and then deep-frying it until it is golden brown on all sides.

The sauce is derived from a combination of hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and sesame oil. The chicken is now smeared in the sauce and garnished with sesame seeds.

There are various versions, such as:

  1. Baked sesame chicken: This version of sesame chicken involves dredging the chicken in flour, panko, and egg before spraying the pieces of chicken with canola oil, then baking for about 25 minutes before tossing the chicken in sesame sauce, then baking for an extra ten minutes.
  2. Honey sesame chicken: In this variation of sesame chicken, honey is added to the sauce. Giving it a rich caramel color and a delightful taste.
  3. Vegetable Sesame Chicken: This variation includes stir-fried vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots, and bell peppers, along with the chicken.
  4. Orange Sesame Chicken: Orange juice or orange zest is added to the sauce, giving it a tangy flavor.
  5. Spicy Sesame Chicken: This version adds chili peppers or chili sauce to the sauce, giving it a spicy kick.

What Does Sesame Chicken Taste Like?

Sesame chicken is quite similar to the taste of general tso chicken, but it is more of a sweet and savory chicken dish with a nutty hint (thanks to the sesame seed) as opposed to a more spicy general tso chicken. The cornstarch and flour batter used gives the chicken dish a layer of crunchiness.

Is Sesame Chicken Breaded?

Sesame chicken is breaded. The chicken gets marinated in a mixture of rice wine, soy sauce, and cornstarch before being coated in flour or cornstarch and then deep-fried. This breading helps create that complex texture of being crunchy on the outside yet juicy on the inside.

Is Sesame Chicken Gluten Free?

Traditional sesame chicken is not gluten-free. Most times, all-purpose flour is used for breading the chicken. Also, the chicken is usually marinated in soy sauce, which contains gluten. Most of the sesame chicken sold in restaurants is not gluten-free or safe for celiac and nonceliac gluten-sensitive people.

However, it is still possible to enjoy gluten-free sesame chicken. You have to ask the server to swap out gluten-containing flour with gluten-free all-purpose flour, cornstarch, or sorghum flour (I prefer this particular flour, as it tastes almost exactly like wheat flour).

I usually prefer to make my gluten-free sesame chicken at home, as I have encountered gluten symptoms a few times I dined out( even after making my sensitivity clear to the server). I guess they still used the equipment they used to fry breaded meats. I have attached my recipe to this post, and you’ll love it.

Is Sesame Sauce Gluten Free?

No, sesame sauce is not gluten-free. While the honey/brown sugar, rice wine, and traditional hoisin sauce used are gluten-free, the soy sauce, most commercial hoisin sauce, and oyster sauce used in sesame sauce contain gluten as a result of wheat used as a thickener.

If you’re making the sesame chicken at home, it is best to look at the labels of the sauce and ensure it is gluten-free. Also, let the server know that you can eat chicken or sauce that contains gluten when dining out.

What is sesame chicken made of?

Sesame chicken is made of chicken thighs or breasts, cornstarch or flour, eggs, soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, honey, brown sugar, rice wine, ginger, garlic, and sesame seeds.

Is Sesame Chicken Healthy?

Sesame chicken is healthier than general tso chicken and orange chicken, as it contains fewer calories, fats, and sugar. Also, its recipe often includes vegetables such as carrots and broccoli, which add fiber and nutrients to the dish. However, all deep-fried dishes contain significant amounts of calories and fat and should be eaten moderately. Also, it contains high sodium.

How Many Calories Are in Sesame Chicken? (and fats)

A nine-piece serving of sesame chicken supplies 554 calories (this is without the sides). Also, it contains 27 grams of fat, of which 5 grams are saturated fats, supplying 35% and 23% of your recommended daily value.

How Many Carbs Does Sesame Chicken Have?

Sesame chicken is breaded, which makes it high in carbohydrates. Per serving, you will be supplied with 51 grams of carbs and 30 grams of sugar.

Tips for ordering gluten-free sesame chicken in restaurants

When planning on dining out, I usually research restaurants ahead of time before I step out. Here are some tips that could aid you in eating a gluten-free sesame chicken when next you dine out:

  • Call Ahead: This should become a common practice for you. Before you visit any restaurant, ensure to call ahead and inquire about their gluten-free options; this will aid you in making your decisions.
  • Inform the server: As soon as you’re approached by the server, inform him or her about your gluten allergy so they can take necessary precautions to ensure the meal is safe.
  • Ask For ingredients and modifications: Ask about the flour that was used in breading, the sauce used in marinating the chicken, and the sauce spread; if there are gluten-containing sauces amongst them, you could request a modification to accommodate your dietary needs.

Gluten-free sesame chicken recipe

This recipe is fast and can be made in less than 30 minutes. It is one of the healthiest sesame chicken recipes you’ll ever try; it has higher protein, fewer calories, carbs, fats, sugar, and sodium. And guess what? We won’t be deep-frying, yet we will still create that crispy texture we all love. Let us dive in!

What you need for the chicken is:

  • Half a kg of skinless, boneless chicken thighs or breasts diced into cubes of 1 inch.
  • 2 tablespoons of avocado oil
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • One and a half gluten-free soy sauces (tamari or coconut aminos)

What you need for the sesame sauce is:

  • Half a cup of water.
  • 3 tablespoons of gluten-free coconut aminos, soy sauce, or tamari sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon of rice wine
  • 2 tablespoons of honey (you can also use maple syrup if you like).
  • 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • Half a teaspoon of minced fresh ginger,
  • 1 minced clove of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of water.
  • Optionally, you could also get pinched red pepper flakes.
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds.

Instructions

  1. Mix the diced chicken, 1 and a half tablespoons of tamari, and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch in a small bowl. With the aid of a fork, toss the chicken until it is evenly coated.
  2. Over medium heat, heat a tablespoon of avocado oil in a medium-sized skillet.
  3. Since we are not deep-frying, the third process has to be done in batches. Add the chicken pieces to your pan and cook each side (until it has no pink side) for 3 minutes each.
  4. Once done with the first batch, repeat the process for the other chicken.

While you wait for each side of the chicken to cook, let us get the sauce ready.

  1. Mix your tamari, rice wine, honey, toasted sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and pepper flakes (if you’re using them). Whisk until properly combined.
  2. In a little bowl, whisk a tablespoon of water and cornstarch until you get a slurry mix.
  3. Once your chicken is cooked, set the heat to low.
  4. Mix in the slurry mixture from step two into step one; this should create a milky mix.
  5. Turn the sauce into your pan and heat for 5 minutes until it becomes thickened and bubbling.
  6. Coat your chicken in the pan, sprinkle your seeds, and serve!

What to serve with sesame chicken?

  • Rice: Rice is a staple food in a lot of Asian cuisines and can be served fried or steamed. It is a common side to pair with sesame chicken.
  • Lebanese Vermicelli Noddles: Lebanese vermicelli noodles are one of my favorite sides for orange chicken, general tso chicken, teriyaki chicken, chicken tikka masala, and sesame chicken. It practically goes with any chicken dish, and I bet you’ll have a pleasant experience.
  • Noodles: gluten-free rice Noodles are another great side dish for sesame chicken. They can be served in a variety of ways, such as lo mein or chow mein, and can provide a satisfying and filling addition to the meal.
  • Salads: What beats a healthy salad side dressed with kewpie mayo? Salads create a refreshing balance of flavor, nutrients, and fiber. If you’re looking for a healthy side, then you are good to go with the salads.
  • Mixed veggies: Stir-fried or steamed vegetables are a healthy and delicious side dish you could pair with sesame chicken any time. They add bright colors, textures, and nutrients as well.

Final Thoughts

Sesame chicken is one of the healthiest chicken dishes you’ll ever try. The inclusion of sesame oil and seeds creates a unique chicken experience that you’ll always remember, with a sweet, savory, and nutty flavor. However, it is not gluten-free as it is breaded and contains soy sauce that contains wheat.

If you wish to enjoy this at your local restaurants, ensure to research and call ahead of time to ensure they get enough time to marinate your chicken and prepare it just right. I prefer going to restaurants that are known to offer gluten-free menus.

Is Sesame Chicken The Same As Orange Chicken?

A common characteristic of orange chicken and sesame chicken is the use of boneless chicken meat. However, they are distinct in a lot of ways. Most notably, sesame chicken makes use of a soy sauce and sesame oil base, which creates a nutty savory flavor; orange chicken makes use of orange zest and soy sauce to create a tangy flavor.

Is sesame chicken the same as general TSO chicken?

General tso chicken features a tangy and spicy dish made with boneless chicken thighs and breasts, while sesame chicken is sweeter and more savory.

Is Chicken Piccata Gluten Free?

0
Is Chicken Piccata Gluten Free?

Italian cuisine stands as the global epitome of culinary excellence, offering a plethora of flavors and delicacies. Among these, Chicken Piccata, with its zesty sauce, stands out as a beacon of irresistible taste.

For those looking to enjoy all the taste life has to offer but with a gluten-free filter, it may sound daunting to venture into the unknown when it comes to choosing food choices. But worry not, as your gluten-free preferences won’t stop you from enjoying a chicken piccata bursting with flavors.

What is Chicken Piccata?

Chicken piccata is an Italian classic dish. It is made of thin, tender, and breaded chicken breast cooked in a lemon butter-caper sauce. Its versatility is part of its appeal. It can be served as a side dish alongside rice, veggies, and pasta or as a main course.

To make this, you will have to dredge the chicken in flour to create that characteristic crispy coating when it is sautéed in a combination of butter and olive oil. Then, the chicken is cooked until each side gets that enticing golden brown color, and then it is removed from the pan.

The sauce is then made by deglazing the pan with white wine, lemon juice, and chicken broth. Capers, garlic, and parsley are added to the sauce, which is cooked until it thickens.

Since iron is an important mineral for pregnant mothers, my love for lean meat grew when I had my second son. I made lots of chicken dishes, including chicken tikka masala, but hey, I love the chicken piccata more.

What does Chicken Piccata taste like?

Chicken piccata has a unique combination of textures and flavors that can’t be resisted by the majority of palates.

The taste of chicken piccata can be described as tangy, with a tart punch as a result of the lemon used, while the butter eases the tanginess, creating a rich, tangy, creamy, juicy, and crispy chicken dish.

The taste of chicken piccata could vary sharply, depending on what was used in the sauce. Ingredients like white wine and shallots add rich depth to the sauce. You will have to try it to understand the goodness.

Is Chicken Piccata Gluten-Free?

Traditional Chicken Piccata is not gluten-free as all-purpose wheat flour is used to dredge the chicken before it is cooked, making it unsafe for individuals with celiac disease or nonceliac gluten sensitivity.

However, there are lots of ways to modify this dish, and you wouldn’t even know it is gluten-free. You can use (or request) gluten-free all-purpose flour instead of regular flour for dredging. I use cornstarch because I love the taste I derive.

Another option is to skip the dredging part and cook the chicken without coating, but you will be sacrificing that crunchy texture, which I don’t recommend. You should just get yourself a jerk chicken instead of this step.

While dining out, communicate your dietary restriction to the chef so they can take precautions and substitute a possible gluten-containing sauce with a gluten-free sauce, since everyone has a secret sauce they use to create a signature taste around their brand. Also, if you’re making it at home, check the ingredient labels and be sure it is free from gluten.

Is Chicken Piccata healthy?

The chicken breast used for this recipe contains over 128 calories per 3-ounce serving, 26 grams of protein, zero carbs, and 2.7 grams of fat. It also contains vitamins B12, iron, zinc, copper, and tryptophan, which are all necessary for proper bodily function and muscle development.

However, when this chicken is sauteed with butter and olive oil, its saturated fat and calorie content increases significantly. To make this dish healthier, you can use less butter and olive oil or substitute them entirely with avocado oil.

Fresh ingredients such as lemon juice, capers, and parsley used in chicken piccata make it healthy (provided it is eaten in moderation and healthier cooking methods are used). Consider serving it with a side of vegetables or salads to add nutrients and balance the meal.

Does using gluten-free flour affect the taste or texture of the dish?

Unfortunately, when you use gluten-free flour for dredging the chicken, the taste is usually impacted. Almost all gluten-free flour has a unique taste that is noticeably different from wheat flour.

However, sorghum flour is the only gluten-free flour that has a taste and texture that is almost exactly like wheat flour. You can always substitute your wheat flour recipes with sorghum flour, and you will barely notice.

Gluten-Free Sides to Elevate Your Chicken Piccata Experience

Your gluten-free chicken piccata can be complemented with these tantalizing side dishes:

  • Roasted Vegetables:

Enhance your plate with a vibrant array of oven-roasted vegetables, such as cherry tomatoes, asparagus, and bell peppers. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with gluten-free seasonings for a burst of color and flavor.

  • Quinoa Pilaf:

Elevate your grain game with a gluten-free quinoa pilaf. Cook quinoa with gluten-free broth, toss in sautéed vegetables, and finish with a squeeze of lemon for a light and nutritious side.

  • Mashed Cauliflower:

Swap traditional mashed potatoes for velvety mashed cauliflower. Steam cauliflower until tender, mash with garlic and herbs, and indulge in a creamy, gluten-free alternative.

  • Caprese Salad with Avocado:

Take the classic Caprese salad up a notch by adding creamy avocado slices. Drizzle with a balsamic glaze and sprinkle with fresh basil for a refreshing gluten-free side.

  • Polenta Fries:

Transform polenta into crispy fries by slicing and baking until golden. Serve with a gluten-free dipping sauce for a delightful twist on the classic.

  • Gluten-free Pasta:

Almost all Italian dishes are much more enjoyable with the signature pasta on the side, but pasta isn’t always gluten-free. Good for you! You can always switch to gluten-free pasta and never miss out on this amazing side.

  • Gluten-free Lebanese vermicelli rice:

This is one of my favorite sides of the lot. It is made with long-grain rice and short strands of vermicelli noodles toasted in butter before they are both cooked. The result is usually exciting for the palate. You can try our Lebanese vermicelli recipe.

Gluten-Free Chicken Piccata Recipe

Being gluten-sensitive shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying any meal. I only substitute gluten-containing ingredients with gluten-free ingredients. Here is my favorite way to make gluten-free chicken piccata:

Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup gluten-free flour (consider rice flour or almond flour)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • 1 cup of gluten-free chicken broth
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 1/4 cup capers, drained
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter (optional)

Preparing the Chicken:

Start by seasoning the chicken breasts with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, then add flavor to your chicken by delicately dredging each chicken breast in gluten-free flour, ensuring to shake off any excess.

Cook the Chicken:

  • In a large skillet, prepare to cook your delicious piccata by heating olive oil over medium-high heat.
  • Witness the transformation as the chicken breasts cook and bubble in the skillet, cooking for approximately 4-5 minutes per side until they achieve a golden brown hue and a state of culinary perfection.
  • Now Imagine yourself as a premier chef and remove the chicken from the skillet, setting them aside in anticipation of their flavorful reunion.

Making the Sauce:

  • Protect your sauce from unneeded mixing of flavors by deglazing the skillet with white wine, gracefully scraping up any browned bits left behind.
  • Introduce the gluten-free chicken broth, the tang of lemon juice, and the burst of capers, allowing them to intertwine while they simmer for 5-7 minutes to reduce the sauce to a harmonious consistency.

Finish the Dish:

  • Now, like a chef in his final moments of cooking a premium dish, reunite the cooked chicken with the sauce, ensuring each piece is bathed in a savory composition.
  • For an encore, consider a swirl of butter to add a touch of richness to the already delectable sauce.
  • Garnish the masterpiece with a sprinkle of finely chopped parsley before serving.

Final thoughts

The traditional chicken piccata recipe calls for the chicken to be dredged in wheat all-purpose flour, which means it is not suitable for you if you have gluten sensitivity of any form.

However, that shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying this dish, as you can make your dietary restriction known if you’re dining out or you can make the chicken piccata at home and substitute the gluten-containing ingredients.

Is General Tso Chicken Gluten Free?

0
is general tso chicken gluten free

General Tso’s chicken, often referred to as an American-Chinese cuisine, was named after General Tso Tsung-tang, a Chinese military leader. This dish is often made with chicken breast, and it is inexplicably awesome.

Besides Jerk Chicken, general tso chicken has become one of my favorite chicken dishes over the years, and I have made countless variations with numerous ingredients for my family.

However, a typical concern if you’re gluten-sensitive or have celiac disease is whether it is safe for you to have some. Here is all we know about the gluten status of General Tso’s chicken, its healthy status, and answers to most other inquiries of yours.

What Is General Tso Chicken?

General Tso’s chicken is the most popular Huananese dish you’ve ever heard about. It is made from a combination of slightly battered chicken in a sweet and sour sauce and chili. This recipe is present in almost all restaurants you visit across the world.

Despite being famous, you’ll be shocked to know that this dish isn’t all that popular where it hails from. On my visit to Hunan in 2005, I scanned restaurant menus for general Tso’s chicken, as I so much wanted to try the locally made version, and that was where I learned that the dish isn’t popular in Hunan because they hardly combine savory and sweet tastes.

Further inquiries opened my eyes, as I realized General Tso’s chicken is not officially penned down in the classic cookbooks of Hunanese foods; however, it is the backwash of the Chinese Civil War.

After the Nationalist Party lost, they fled to Taiwan with as many gifted people, including chefs—notably Peng Chang-Kuei, who invented the dish with typical Hunanese flavors—sour, heavy, salty, and hot.

A while after retreating to Taiwan, he came to the United States and opened his restaurant in New York in the 1970s. He had to adapt his recipe to include sugar (giving it that sweet, savory taste), as the traditional recipe was made without sugar.

Is General Tso Chicken Breaded?

There are lots of recipes available, but most of them involve dipping the chicken in a mixture of flour, water, and other ingredients (batter) before it is fried, which means that while it is not breaded in crumbs, it is still coated with batter, which still qualifies as being breaded.

How Does General Tso Chicken Taste?

General Tso chicken tastes tangy, sweet, and spicy. The dried chilis make the dish spicy, while its thick sauce (a marinade of cornstarch, soy sauce, and rice wine) gives it a tangy and sweet taste. Most recipes call for the removal of the bones and skins of the chicken, making it crispy, easy to eat, and mushy.

Is General Tso Chicken Gluten Free?

General Tso’s chicken is not gluten-free. It is traditionally dipped in wheat flour batter. Also, it is marinated in wheat-containing soy sauce, making it not gluten-free and not safe for gluten-sensitive individuals.

However, it is possible to get some gluten-free General Tso chicken. When dining out, it is essential to communicate your dietary restrictions to the server and chef, asking them to substitute the soy sauce with coconut aminos or tamari sauce or substitute the wheat flour batters with cornstarch, rice flour, quinoa flour, or chickpea flour, while also ensuring different utensils are used for frying.

You could also make it at home to ensure all ingredients are gluten-free. I will be sharing my favorite recipe further down in the article.

Is General Tso Chicken Healthy?

Unfortunately, General Tso chicken is not a healthy diet. While it contains healthy spices, veggies, and lean meat, when fried, the calorie and fat content increases significantly.

Also, in each General Tso chicken serving, there is over 1/4 teaspoon of salt, which could lead to high blood pressure and heart disease over time as a result of the high sodium content.

In a serving of general Tso chicken (535g), there are over 1578 calories, 88 grams of fat (15g saturated fats), 128 grams of carbohydrates, 62 grams of sugar, 284mg of cholesterol, and 62 grams of sugar, making it not healthy as it delivers almost your entire day’s need of calories, carbs, fats, and sodium.

While we need carbs to fuel our activities for the day, you could be headed toward excessive weight gain if you constantly eat some general Tso, as there is a chance you’ll pair the chicken with some chow mein or rice, which sends the carb content through the roof. According to Mayo Clinic, we should consume between 225 and 325 grams of carbs a day.

With each layer, sauce, and side; fats, and calories are added. However, this shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying general Tso. A trick for me is to pair it with fibrous veggies, which helps ease up on the carbs while keeping you satisfied.

What to Serve With General Tso Chicken

There are many kinds of veggies and sides you could pair with general Tso chicken. Here are the ones I love most:

Roasted Vegetable

A great way to enjoy your general chicken is to throw in some roasted veggies; the taste is always great. To ensure they are well cooked, I sprinkle a little salt, olive oil, and pepper before roasting them.

Fresh Salads

Another gluten-free side you’ll enjoy with general tso chicken is a fresh salad comprising finely chopped lettuce and dried tomatoes dressed with Aioli, Kewpie mayo, or your favorite salad dressing.

Lumpia

Lumpia, sometimes referred to as egg rolls or spring rolls, are thin, crispy wrappers typically filled with a mix of vegetables and meat or tofu.

When paired with General Tso’s chicken, the contrasting textures and flavors of the two dishes can create a satisfying and well-rounded meal.

The crispy and savory lumpia serves as a perfect complement to the sweet and spicy fried chicken, providing a balance of flavors and textures in each bite.

Vegetable soup

The vegetable soup can be customized just how you like it. You can use vegetables like celery, carrots, and potatoes. To get this soup ready, in a little olive oil, you should sauté the veggies, add broth and water afterward, bring to a boil on low heat, and simmer for 21 minutes. You’re good to go.

Mashed Potatoes

Mash potatoes and general tso can never go wrong. You could add some corn or green beans to the mashed potatoes to create an extra twist.

Final Thoughts

General Tso’s chicken is an irresistible kitchen marvel. It awakens your taste buds in dimensions words can’t explain, with its sweet, spicy, and savory flavor. However, it is sometimes breaded with wheat flour and marinated with soy sauce, both of which contain gluten, making it unsuitable for people with celiac disease or noncelian gluten sensitivity.

However, being gluten-sensitive doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this chicken dish. Communicate your dietary restrictions to the chef through the server, and they will make a gluten-free variation for you. It is best to visit restaurants that take strong measures to ensure foods are gluten-free whenever you dine out.

Are Egg Roll Wrappers Gluten Free?

0
Are Egg Roll Wrappers Gluten Free?

Egg roll wrappers are essential to lots of Asian appetizers, they offer an interesting way to enjoy your fillings, which eventually creates a party of flavor in your mouth.

However, if you’re gluten intolerant or have celiac disease, it is important to be cautious about what you eat at any point in time. Here is all we know about egg roll wrappers’ gluten status, and every other thing we know you’ll love to know.

What Are Egg Roll Wrappers?

Egg roll wrappers are crepe-esque pastries commonly used in making lots of Asian dishes, such as the egg rolls we love so much. They are thin sheets of dough, yellowish, with a chewy texture when cooked.

The addition of eggs is what makes the egg roll wrapper unique when compared to most other Asian wrappers, such as lumpia wrappers (usually made with corn starch, rice flour, and sometimes wheat flour) and spring roll wrappers (made with wheat flour).

One great thing I love about egg roll wrappers is their versatility, as they can be used for almost all recipes that call for a wrapper. These wrappers are usually filled with meat, vegetables, and sometimes noodles, then rolled and sealed before being deep-fried or baked, which creates that crispy texture. The result is what we refer to as an egg roll.

What Are Egg Roll Wrappers Made Of?

Egg roll wrappers are made of a mixture of wheat flour ( sometimes rice flour is used), which gives texture and structure to the wrapper, water, eggs, which also impact the texture and color, and salt.

Are Egg Roll Wrappers Gluten Free?

Traditional egg roll wrappers are not gluten-free as they are by-products of wheat flour, which contains gluten, a storage protein that gives egg roll wrappers their elasticity and structure but is not safe for individuals with celiac and nonceliac gluten sensitivity.

However, some companies manufacture gluten-free egg roll wrapper mixes that could be used instead of the traditional wheat-contained wrappers. These wrappers are made from rice or tapioca flour and are just as good.

When I dine out, I like to make my condition known, and with the proper inquiry on the possibility of a gluten-free wrapper instead of the traditional ones, I could be served with the littlest odds of cross-contamination.

Since not all restaurants take proper precautions for gluten-sensitive people, and I cannot be denied my love for egg rolls, I make some lovely wrappers at home for my egg rolls or lumpia that just taste as good, and I’ll be sharing the recipe shortly.

Are Egg Roll Wrappers Healthy?

The egg roll wrappers may not be considered healthy since they are void of lots of essential nutrients and yet contain a significant amount of carbs and calories as a result of being fried, which means they may not be part of a healthy low-carb, low-calorie plan, except if baked.

How Many Carbs Are In Egg Roll Wrappers?

The majority of egg roll wrappers are carbohydrate-based. There are 16 grams of carbs in a 25-gram egg roll wrapper. This carb could be beneficial as it could contribute to your compulsory 130g of carbs daily (as the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academies suggests). However, if you’re on a low-carb diet, you should be aware of its carb content and limit your intake.

How Many Calories Are In Egg Roll Wrappers?

There are 70 calories in a 25-gram egg roll wrapper, which equals an insignificant 3.5 percent of your daily calorie intake if you’re on a 2000-calorie-per-day diet. However, when you include the fillings, the egg roll can contain up to 373 calories.

Egg Roll Wrappers Gluten Free

Are egg roll wrappers high in sodium?

A 25-gram egg roll wrapper contains 150mg of sodium, which amounts to 7.5% of the 2000 mg limit suggested by the World Health Organization. The sodium in a single wrapper is not high, but when you consume more than one, it begins to add up.

Are egg roll wrappers high in fat?

There are 0.4 grams of fat in a 25-gram egg roll wrapper, with no saturated fat. The absence of fat is one of the major reasons why egg roll wrappers are low in calories. Fat in the right quantities is beneficial to the body.

Are Egg Roll Wrappers Bad For Diabetics?

Egg roll wrappers are diabetes-friendly as they contain no sugar. However, they are by-products of refined carbs, which can cause a spike in sugar levels. If you’re on a diabetes diet, you need to consume egg roll wrappers moderately in combination with a balanced meal that includes lean protein, healthy fats, and plenty of vegetables.

Dining-out options for gluten-free egg rolls

Doing your research ahead of time is very important if you want to have some egg rolls while you dine out, as you have to be sure that the restaurant provides gluten-free options.

Lots of Asian and Chinese restaurants have begun to offer gluten-free menus, including egg rolls. Make it a habit to communicate your dietary restrictions with the server, and then you can both work on a gluten-free option.

It is also paramount to verify that separate utensils are used to prepare gluten-free and gluten-containing foods. Also, there are hidden sources of gluten, such as marinades and wheat-based sauces, that may be used. Here is a restaurant where I have enjoyed gluten-free egg rolls, noodles with pork and shrimp, and other meals:

Thanh Truch

Thanh Truc debuted in 2004, and I have eaten lots of satisfactory meals bought from there. They make gluten-free egg rolls that are safe for celiac and non-celiac gluten-sensitive individuals. Just make your needs known.

Brands That Sell Gluten-free Egg Roll Wrappers

If you love egg rolls, lumpia, or spring rolls, you are in luck, as we have provided an ample selection of gluten-free wrapper brands on store shelves or online. Here is a list of brands that offer gluten-free egg roll wrappers in the U.S.:

Star Anise

For almost all my Asian recipes that require wrappers, Star Anise rice wrapper does the job wonderfully. This wrapper is quite thicker than the regular white wraps made from brown rice, water, green tea, cassava root, and salt. I have used this wrapper for lumpia, cauliflower wings, wonton, and egg rolls, and they exceed my expectations each time.

Mom’s Place

Mom’s Place makes one of the best gluten-free egg rolls and wonton wrap mixes. These wrappers have an elastic texture and provide all that crunchy texture when fried. It is easy to prepare, and you don’t have to miss eating egg rolls anymore. Unlike most wrappers, Mom’s Place wrapper has a twist to it as it is made from potato flour, brown rice flour, sorghum flour, non-GMO cornstarch, xanthan gum, potato starch, salt, and sugar.

Can egg roll wrappers be substituted with other wraps?

A good characteristic of a wrapper is the ability to have elasticity to a certain degree, and when fried, it also becomes crunchy. Some of these wrappers have their own unique character and may not be exactly like your regular egg roll wrappers. Here are the gluten-free wrappers you can use instead of an egg roll wrapper:

Rice Paper Wrappers

Rice paper wrappers are made from products of tapioca flour or tapioca starch, rice flour, water, and salt. They are thin and quite delicate. Rice wrappers are round or square and transparent. This wrapper is notably used for Vietnamese dishes such as banh mi, spring rolls, and summer rolls.

When fried, they are less crispier than egg roll wrappers, but they can be used just fine. I wouldn’t say I substitute with this; rather, this is what I use most of the time, as they have a mild flavor that doesn’t interfere with the taste of your egg rolls.

Lettuce leaves

Lettuce leaves are another great gluten-free substitute for egg roll wrappers, as they are just as thin. They are less crispy than egg roll wrappers, but they are crunchy and add a unique earthy taste.

I use Boston lettuce, and it is quite crunchy. To make the lettuce more pliable, you just have to soak it in ice water for 10 minutes. This option works best if you’re not into fried dough wrappers.

Other wrapper substitute that contain gluten includes

  • Crepes
  • Sui Mai dumpling wrappers
  • Tortillas
  • Gyoza
  • Wanton wrappers

What To Make With Egg Roll Wrappers

  • Mini lasagna cups
  • Egg roll wrapper, thin-crust pizza
  • Ceasar salad wonton cups
  • Caramel apple egg rolls
  • Cheesy, wonton-wrapped hot dogs
  • Pizza logs
  • Crab Rangoon

Can I Use Egg Roll Wrappers For Wontons?

You can use egg roll wrappers for wontons, as they are made with the same ingredient (which may vary from brand to brand). The notable difference is their sizes, but the wrappers can be used interchangeably.

Can I Use Egg Roll Wrappers For Lumpia?

Egg roll wrappers can be used for lumpia. Lumpia wrappers are crepe-like and crispier. When making lumpia, I prefer to use its wrapper instead of wonton or egg roll wrappers.

Do Egg Roll Wrappers Have Gluten? Final Thoughts

Egg roll wrappers contain gluten, as they are traditionally made from wheat flour. However, if you have gluten intolerance or celiac disease, there are lots of gluten-free options that are made with rice flour or tapioca flour.

Also, while dining out, feel free to make your special request, or better yet, go to restaurants that are known for making gluten-free meals, or just make them yourself.

Is Jerk Chicken Gluten Free?

0
Is Jerk Chicken Gluten Free?

Jerk chicken is one of those chicken dishes that you will never forget, as the heat from the habanero pepper will always leave you with a tale. This dish is versatile and can be easily customized. For milder, less hot, and more spicy jerk chicken, jalapeno or cayenne pepper could be used.

The jerk chicken has an explosion of flavors that can be paired with almost anything, and my little son loves indulging in his own experience, as he always requests horchata with his jerk chicken. But is jerk chicken gluten-free? Can individuals with any form of gluten sensitivity eat some of these chickens? Let’s find out!

What is Jerk Chicken?

The term “jerk” was derived from the cooking technique of Maroons (African slaves who were shipped and overlabored to boost the sugar trade in the Caribbean). These marrons escaped from their oppressors and created their own settlements in the hills.

Their cooking innovation, which kept them hidden from their oppressors, involved “jerking,” a technique where they had to spice and cook in a smokeless pit underground against an open flame. Jerk chicken is traditionally cooked today in homage to its origins over pinto wood and an oil barrel to get that authentic flavor.

The jerk sauce is made from a mixture of peppers, allspice, thyme, cayenne, paprika, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar, garlic, soy sauce, vinegar, scotch bonnet peppers (which bring heat and intense flavor but are usually optional), onions, sage, orange juice, and fresh lime juice. This sauce is used to marinate chicken, fish, pork, or even seafood.

Is jerk chicken spicy?

The jerk chicken has a hot, tangy, and sweet taste that is complimented by a smoky, musty note. It can be mildly spicy if cayenne pepper is used, but it can be way hotter if habanero pepper is used. If seasoned right, it shouldn’t burn your mouth. Rather, the spicy level should only create an emotional experience where you’re able to enjoy the whole taste of this kitchen masterpiece.

Is Jerk Chicken Breaded?

Breading is the process of frying meat coated in breading, which enhances the texture and aroma of the meat. It is a usual cause of gluten contamination in some chicken dishes. However, jerk chicken is not breaded and is free from any breading process.

Is Jerk Chicken Gluten Free?

Jerk chicken is gluten-free. Traditional jerk chicken is made from ingredients such as Scotch bonnet peppers, thyme, garlic, citric fruits, vinegar, spice, and herbs, which are all gluten-free. making it safe for celiacs and individuals with non-celiac gluten sensitivity to consume.

However, there is a caveat: commercially prepared jerk chicken could be cross-contaminated, and utensils used to fry gluten-containing chicken could equally be used in frying the jerk chicken.

Also, there is a possibility that some of the refined spices may contain binders derived from wheat. The soy sauce is also a regular source of gluten.

Always make it a norm to inquire about the gluten status of the jerk chicken. Or prioritize restaurants that make sure to prepare your foods without gluten by changing gloves, using separate utensils, and cleaning up the cooking area (countertops). One such restaurant I have used is CAVA.

Is Jerk Chicken Healthy?

Jerk chicken is healthy as it contains loads of spices and herbs that provide numerous health benefits. The marinade contains garlic, which boosts the immune system. Also, thyme, allspice, and garlic are rich in antioxidants, which prevent free radical damage to the body. The nutmeg also aids in proper sleep.

The marinade itself is relatively low in calories, so it can add flavor without adding excessive amounts of fat or calories. However, the method of cooking can significantly affect the nutritional value of the dish.

Grilling or smoking the jerk chicken is a healthier option than deep-frying it, which can add extra fat and calories.

Is jerk chicken high in sodium? Jerk chicken could have a high amount of sodium, depending on the recipe. Some recipes call for soy sauce, which is high in sodium in addition to the salt used. Also, if the jerk chicken is paired with sides that are equally high in sodium, this heightens the overall sodium content.

How Many Calories Is Jerk Chicken? Jerk chicken, when eaten with its skin and depending on the sides, could have up to 1000 calories, especially if deep-fried. However, a piece of grilled jerk chicken contains 280 calories.

Other Gluten-Free Chicken Dishes You Could Try

Here is one of my favorite gluten-free chicken dishes that you’ll love to try:

Chicken tikka masala

Chicken tikka masala is a product of deboned chicken marinated in spice and yogurt, after which it is roasted and served with a tomato-based sauce. There are lots of variations to the recipes, so it is important to always ask what was used in making the one you buy at the restaurant.

Standard chicken tikka masala is gluten-free, but cross-contamination could happen in the kitchen, like with most other foods. Here is my recipe, which you could indulge in at home.

Does Jerk chicken contain gluten? Final Thoughts

Traditional Jerk chicken does not contain gluten. However, there is still a risk of cross-contamination in the kitchens of restaurants where you might want to get some jerk chicken.

Always make your gluten sensitivity known, and some restaurants will do just as well to prepare your jerk chicken without using utensils they used for other gluten-containing meals. However, the best way to eat some gluten-free jerk chicken is to make it yourself.

Is Lebanese Vermicelli Rice Gluten Free?

0
Is Lebanese Vermicelli Rice Gluten Free?

Raising kids can be much more fun when you all love doing most things together. Kitchen time is never dreaded, as they always love to come help and beg for some of the kitchen goodness. Just as my kids love teriyaki chicken, they also love to ask for a scoop of roasted vermicelli noodles each time we make the Lebanese vermicelli rice recipe.

The Lebanese vermicelli noodles are worth every bit of effort put into them, as they have that great aroma and nutty flavor, which I take to a different dimension with my choice of spice, but is it gluten-free? In this expository, we will explore Lebanese vermicelli rice gluten status and possible health risks, and we will also provide you with a gluten-free recipe that you will fall in love with.

Gluten: Why is it a concern?

Gluten is a storage protein found in grains like barley, wheat, and rye. It is responsible for the elastic texture in dough and the chewy texture in bread, and it is also the reason why baked goods like bread, cakes, and donuts maintain their shape. Just think about it as a natural binder and texturizer.

But for celiacs or people with non-celiac gluten sensitivity, consuming a gluten-contained food can lead to symptoms that are not pleasant at all, such as digestive issues, brain fog, fatigue, IBS, and more. If you’re unsure about your gluten intolerance status, you can check out this checklist.

This is why it is essential to steer clear of any food or snack that contains gluten for a celiac or gluten-sensitive person. This will not only help reverse the damage already done, but it will also prevent unwanted symptoms.

What is Lebanese vermicelli rice?

You can’t talk about five foods in Lebanon without mentioning the Lebanese vermicelli rice. It is popular, cherished, and known for its distinctive aroma and delicate flavors. This dish is basically made with rice, vermicelli noodles, salt, and butter.

The rice used for this delicacy is a long-grain variety such as basmati or jasmine, which I prefer for its floral notes and nutty aroma. Since the Lebanese vermicelli rice isn’t meant to be sticky, the rice is thoroughly washed to eliminate excessive starch, ensuring it cooks evenly and doesn’t become too sticky. This meticulous process is very important to achieve the light, separate grain character of Lebanese vermicelli rice.

As for the noodle component, thin, short strands of pasta, such as vermicelli noodles, are used. These vermicelli noodles are toasted in butter or oil (but hey, never allow your noodles to be toasted in oil, as the butter gives the whole dish a texture and flavor that you’ll always crave). This process of toasting enriches the nutty flavor of the vermicelli, which impacts the entire dish.

Traditionally, the vermicelli is sauteed in butter until it becomes golden brown, ushering in a flavor base for the rice. Then the rice is added to the already toasted vermicelli, and they are both cooked together, during which the rice absorbs the essence of the vermicelli noodles.

In most cases, spices like cumin, bay leaves, and cinnamon are added to enhance the complexity of the dish. I most often use the versatile Lebanese vermicelli rice as a side, accompanying stews, grilled meats, or my most cherished vegetable dishes.

Is Lebanese vermicelli rice gluten free?

Traditional Lebanese vermicelli rice is not gluten-free. While the rice and other spices are usually free from gluten, the vermicelli noodles used in this dish are derived from wheat, making it not gluten-free.

For wheat-based vermicelli noodles, gluten helps to retain moisture, acts as a binding agent, contributes to the chewy, firm texture, and also aids the noodles to rise and expand by trapping carbon dioxide produced during leavening or fermentation.

However, there are lots of alternatives to the traditional wheat-based vermicelli noodles. These alternatives are derived from corn flour, rice flour, or a combination of both. If you are eating at a restaurant, enquire about the noodles used and if they used the same utensils for gluten-contained food and gluten-uncontained foods (as this could lead to cross-contamination).

Alternatively, it is best to make this delicacy yourself as you decide what is used or not, and I have an awesome easy-to-follow gluten-free Lebanese vermicelli rice recipe in the later part of this article.

Is Lebanese Vermicelli Rice Healthy?

Unfortunately, Lebanese vermicelli rice is not healthy as a staple in your diet. Toasting vermicelli in oil or butter helps enhance its taste, but it also increases the calories and saturated fat content. Excessive consumption of saturated fat could lead to an increase in cholesterol levels and an increased risk of heart disease.

The healthy status of this meal can be enhanced by using whole grain rice whose bran and germ have not been extracted, like brown basmati rice or whole grain jasmine rice, which is a great source of dietary fiber, protein, B vitamins, and minerals like phosphorus, magnesium, and selenium, which contribute to your overall health.

Brands that offer gluten-free vermicelli noodles

These are the noodles I use instead of wheat-contained vermicelli noodles, and they work just fine.

  • TANISA Organic Rice Vermicelli Noodles.
  • Chang’s Rice Noodle Vermicelli.
  • Recheis Gluten-Free Short Vermicelli.
  • King Soba Organic Vermicelli Noodles
  • Thai Kitchen Gluten-Free Thin Rice Noodles

Does Lebanese vermicelli rice contain gluten? Final Thoughts

Lebanese vermicelli rice does contain gluten, as the vermicelli noodles used in this recipe are made from wheat. However, there are other alternatives that you could use instead, such as vermicelli noodles made from rice flour, corn flour, or both.

Being on a restricted diet doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this delicious Lebanese meal; you only have to make use of gluten-free alternatives that will taste just as good (if not better).

Are Korean Corn Dogs Gluten Free?

0
Are Korean Corn Dogs Gluten Free?

When prepared well, Korean corn dogs are one of the yummiest snacks you’ll enjoy on the street. The party of juicy, sweet, and savory flavors, in conjunction with the crispy texture, creates a feeling out of this world—not describable by words alone. But are Korean corn dogs gluten free?

Being on a restricted diet means we have to take caution in whatever goes down our throats, but that doesn’t stop us from enjoying any snack we crave, as there are always alternative ingredients that could make a copycat, which usually tastes just the same.

We have carried out proper research and provided valuable information on the gluten status of Korean corn dogs and brands that offer gluten-free mixes, and we have furnished you with our easy-to-make recipe, which I know you’ll love to try at home. Let us explore!

What Are Korean Corn Dogs?

Korean corn dogs are a mashup of cheese, hotdogs, fish cakes, or rice cakes covered and fried in a batter skewered on a stick and often dressed with ketchup, sugar, mustard, or mayo. Korean corn dogs can be prepared in a number of ways.

The corn dogs eaten in America are quite different from the corn dogs made in South Korea. I have tried both, and I can say the American version has a doughnut-esque batter that is usually soft. The Korean corn dogs are coated with a yeasted batter with a film of panko bread, resulting in a more crispy batter.

Korean corn dogs can be made into just about anything, and chefs and street food vendors have gotten creative with it, adding numerous fillings such as squid, cheese, rice cakes, or even combining all. You may even come across variations that have french fries, ramen, or sweet and spicy Korean red pepper paste as toppings.

Are Korean Corn Dogs Sweet?

Korean corn dogs are savory because of their fillings and sweetness as a result of sugar added to their batter. Also, some vendors coat the corn dogs with sugar after frying them, which could make the corn dogs even sweeter.

As for the overall taste (with the exception of those coated with sugar as a topping), you should expect the Korean corn dogs to have a slightly salty and savory taste with a sweet contrast, which is further enhanced by the dipping sauce.

For me, the appeal of corn dogs often lies in the contrast of textures: juicy hot dogs encased in a flavorful batter and toppings that are guaranteed to satisfy the cravings of your taste buds.

Read: Does Hot dogs contain dairy?

Are Korean Corn Dogs Healthy?

Unfortunately, Korean hot dogs are not healthy. They have lots of fat (20g), 5 grams of cholesterol, and 33 grams of carbohydrates. and a single stick can supply 475 calories (depending on the type of cheese and mayo used, this can be more than 500 calories).

But hey, we all know this fried junk has little to no health benefits, but we have to satisfy our cravings anyway. Ensure to lead an active life with some exercise here and there, and you can safely have these snacks from time to time with minimal risks.

Are Korean Corn Dogs Gluten Free?

Traditional Korean corn dogs are not gluten-free, as corn dogs usually contain wheat flour in the form of thickeners and fillers. Also, cornmeal and rice flour are sometimes used for the batter, but in most other cases, wheat flour is used to achieve a finer texture, making it not gluten-free.

Most vendors should be aware of whether their Korean corn dogs contain any ingredient that contains gluten, so be sure to inquire about what flour is used in their batter and what brand of hot dog is used.

The best way to ensure your Korean corn dog is gluten-free is to make them yourself. This way, you’ll be in control of whether an ingredient is used or not.

What Is Korean Corn Dog Made Of?

Korean corn dogs are made of rice cakes, mozzarella cheese coated in a batter, hot dogs, fish cakes, rice cakes, and sometimes squid ramen or French fries, glazed with sugar, and then a drizzle of either mayo, ketchup, mustard, or a combination of the three, or gochujang sauce.

Are Korean Corn Dogs Vegetarian?

Korean corn dogs are not vegetarian, as the hot dogs are derived from beef or poultry. For a corn dog recipe to be vegetarian, you will need to substitute the hot dog with tofu, which is a protein-rich option, but you’ll be sacrificing the taste, obviously.

Gluten-Free Corn Dogs Brands

These are my go-to brands on days when I am too lazy to make my Korean corn dog from scratch. While they may not give off those street vibes, they still taste just as good.

Applegate Naturals® Gluten-Free Beef Corn Dogs

This is one of the best gluten-free corn dogs I may have tried. The batter sticks to the dog until you are done, and it is crispy. Although I may have had one or two bad experiences where the meat was hard and bad, I’ll blame that on the quality control of that batch.

Foster Farms Gluten Free Honey Crunch Corn Dogs

This includes both the batter and chicken franks. For the batter, cornstarch, rice flour, yellow corn flour, soy flour, and other gluten-free ingredients are put together to ensure you’re satisfied.

Gluten-Free Corn Dog Mix by Mom’s Place

This is a great mix I have enjoyed using sometimes, but recently, I got a product that wasn’t thoroughly grounded. When processed very well, you can hardly or not notice the difference.

S’Better Farms Beef Corn Dog

Here is another great wheat-free corn dog option with that lovely beef taste. They claim no artificial ingredients were used. I have used them a few times, and I find them worthy of being mentioned here.

Does Korean Corn Dogs Have Gluten? Final Thoughts

Standard Korean corn dogs are not gluten-free, as the meat and batter contain wheat or additives derived from wheat. However, some products, like S’Better Farms or Applegate Farms, offer gluten-free corn dogs that taste just fine.

The best way to enjoy a gluten-free Korean hot dog is to make them yourself, as you can customize them to taste (it is so much fun!), since even if you make a special gluten-free request to your vendor, they may still cross-contaminate in the kitchen.

Is Aioli Gluten Free? Healthy?

0
Is Aioli Gluten Free?

Aioli is one of my favorite sauces. It is versatile and can be used for just about any dish that requires a spread or a dipping sauce. Beyond what is offered on the counters, I have made varieties of flavors, and I have become obsessed with the roasted garlic flavor.

Aioli has an intense garlic taste that we all adore, but is it gluten-free? Can you eat it if you’re on a restricted diet? This article will provide you with all you need to know, including brands that sell gluten-free aioli and gluten-free recipes you’ll love to try at home.

What is Aioli?

While flavored mayonnaise is referred to as aioli in the U.S., it is not mayonnaise. Unlike mayonnaise, which is the product of emulsified egg yolks and oil, aioli is a mouth-watering product of emulsified garlic and olive oil. Traditionally, aioli is only made with garlic and salt. According to David Tanis, A Platter of Figs and Other Recipe

In recent times, we have seen various versions of aioli emerge, from the French version that includes mustard to the version where egg yolks and lemon juice are added, to others that can be referred to as garlic mayonnaise as a result of adding egg yolks.

Aioli is just as great as mayonnaise; it can be added to anything you’d have originally used mayonnaise for, like a dip with crudites, sandwiches, roasted vegetables, french fries, steamed artichokes, as a base for Caesar dressing, and more.

Is Aioli healthy?

Unlike other mayonnaises like kewpie, aioli is less healthy as it contains a lot of calories and is also high in fat. It is best to steer clear of aioli if a healthcare provider has advised you to cut down on your calorie or fat intake.

While aioli would make your dish more palatable and treat you to its unique flavor when added to veggies, meats, and sandwiches, it actually provides you with a substantial health benefit.

Also, if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients used in making aioli, it is best that you avoid them. Beyond the unhealthy fat and calorie content, the allicin found in garlic can help boost your immune system.

Also, the quercetin and sulfur content of garlic can help prevent cataracts. Olive oil provides healthy lipids that aid in the improvement of your skin, according to research.

What Does Aioli Taste Like?

Aioli has a robust, intense garlic flavor, topped off with the fruity, slightly peppery undertone of olive. It is creamy and velvety in the mouth, and versions that include just egg yolks have this slightly umami flavor, while the Dijon mustard or lemon juice varieties just balance the whole flavor.

Is Aioli gluten free?

Aioli is gluten-free and dairy-free. It is a northeast meditation cold sauce made by emulsifying a few ingredients like garlic, olive oil, dijon mustard, salt, and garlic, all of which are gluten-free.

Aioli doesn’t call for thickeners, which are derived from wheat. However, it is best to always look up the labels of any commercial aioli you intend to purchase and ensure no gluten-containing ingredient is included.

Is Chipotle Aioli gluten-free?

Most Chipotle aioli are not gluten-free as they contain modified food starch that is sometimes derived from wheat, malt vinegar, which contains gluten, and other additives such as thickeners and stabilizers, which contain gluten in some cases.

Read through the label, or better yet, contact the customer care of the particular product you intend to buy and verify if they adhere to gluten-free practices or not. The best way to ensure you’re getting a gluten-free chipotle aioli is to make them at home yourself.

Is sriracha aioli gluten free?

Sriracha aioli is of Thai origin, where it is used in soups, as a dipping sauce, and on potato chips. Sriracha is also known as rooster sauce and can be found in almost all restaurants in the U.S.

Sriracha aioli is a creamy and slightly spicy sauce that is traditionally gluten-free as it is made from grated garlic, mustard, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, a pinch of salt, and mayonnaise.

However, for commercial versions, you have to check the labels, and for the ones you get served at restaurants, you have to ask the waiter about their gluten content. Most restaurants are becoming more aware of gluten sensitivity, and they will provide as much help or information on the gluten content of their menu.

Brands that sell gluten-free aioli

These are the brands I purchase my gluten-free aioli from, and I have not had any problems so far:

Marky’s Black Truffle Aioli Sauce Mayonnaise

This is considered more of a truffle aioli mayonnaise, but guess what? It still has that intense garlic taste, which is layered with truffle. It can be used for pizza, fish, sandwiches, asparagus, tater tots, and burgers. It is gluten-free and vegetarian.

Anna’s Country Kitchen’s Local Gluten-Free Dipping Sauce, Spicy Chipotle Aioli

Just like the name suggests, it is gluten-free and has all that chipotle goodness.

Stonewall Kitchen

Stonewall provides an array of flavors you can choose from, like roasted mustard (my favorite), rosemary, and lemon herb aioli, all of which are gluten-free and use natural flavors.

Is garlic aioli gluten-free? Final Thoughts

Garlic aioli is gluten-free as it is made with a few ingredients like garlic, mustard, olive oil, and salt (in some cases, eggs), and all these ingredients are gluten-free.

However, you still have to be cautious while buying commercial products, buy from brands that produce gluten-free items, or just make the sauce at home, since you will have control over what goes in your sauce or not.

Is Tiramisu Gluten Free? Healthy?

0
Is Tiramisu Gluten Free?

One of the most popular desserts in the United States is the Italian tiramisu. It is creamy, rich, elegant, and has the perfect bittersweet contrast. One thing I love about this dessert is that you could make it ahead of time, just like panna cotta.

This article will help you understand if tiramisu is gluten-free or not, walk you through the ingredients, and also provide you with a gluten-free recipe that you will love to try at home.

What Is Tiramisu?

Tiramisu, which means “cheer me up” or “pick me up,” is an Italian coffee-flavored dessert. And one of the best creamy, decadent Italian sweet treats you’ll ever try.

The Tiramisu originates from northern Italy in a city called Treviso. The dessert was invented by pastry chef Roberto Linguanotto, who was inspired by the then-sbatudin (which is now known as tiramisu), which was made of beaten egg yolk and sugar. All he had to do was add mascarpone to the mix.

Is Tiramisu A Cake Or Pudding? Tiramisu is more of a cake than a pudding as it is made by soaking a lady finger biscuit in coffee and layering it with a mix of other ingredients. Pudding is more of a “cooked” sweet dish or a savory steamed dish made with flour and suet, and tiramisu is none of those.

What Does Tiramisu Taste Like?

The elegant tiramisu is a rich Italian dessert made with a ladyfinger biscuit soaked in espresso and layered in eggs, mascarpone cheese, sugar, cocoa powder, and marsala wine. Through the assembly of these ingredients, a refined, intense dish emerges.

The traditional tiramisu has a balance of sweet and bitter taste, with the sweet, creamy texture emerging from the calories present in the mascarpone and the bitter contrast attributed to the ladyfingers soaked in espresso.

Is Tiramisu Gluten Free?

Tiramisu is not gluten-free, as the ladyfingers used in the dessert are made from flour. To make tiramisu gluten-free, you need to make use of homemade gluten-free cakes or gluten-free sponge cakes instead of ladyfingers.

When tiramisu is made with gluten-free alternatives, it tastes almost the same and is just as delicious as the traditional recipe. Only an expert at making and tasting the dessert will notice the difference. Do not be dismayed, as we will share our gluten-free lady fingers recipe shortly.

What Is Tiramisu Made Of?

Ingredient Gluten Status
Ladyfingers Typically contains gluten; gluten-free alternatives are available
Mascarpone cheese Generally gluten-free
Eggs Gluten-free
Sugar Gluten-free
Coffee Gluten-free
Cocoa powder Generally gluten-free
Coffee Liqueur (optional) Check the specific brand for gluten content; some may contain gluten
Vanilla extract Generally gluten-free; check labels
Whipping cream Generally gluten-free; check labels

Is Tiramisu Healthy?

Tiramisu is not healthy as a constant treat. A slice of tiramisu could supply up to 590 calories and 45 grams of fat( half the daily recommended amount of fat). The major causes of these high calories and fats are ladyfingers, whipping cream, and mascarpone cheese.

Ladyfingers contribute 4 grams of fat and 160 calories; Mascarpone contains 124 calories per ounce; and some recipes may require 14 ounces, which amounts to 2240 calories. Over 220 grams of fat and 415 calories are contained in a cup of whipping cream with 44 grams of fat, of which 28 are saturated.

If you are making this dessert yourself, it is very possible to eliminate high-fat ingredients without having to sacrifice taste. Cutting down one-third of the creamy filling or making use of low-fat ricotta cheese or light cream cheese instead of mascarpone will do.

Ensure you are leading a generally healthy lifestyle, and yes, you could enjoy tiramisu conventionally.

What Goes Well With Tiramisu?

There are multiple ways you could enjoy tiramisu, from pairing it with fruits to pairing it with wine. Here are the best ways I love to enjoy mine:

Wines

The persistent coffee taste is best paired with sweet wines like Muscat or Sangue di Giuda, a sparkling red wine. Personally, wines with a high percentage, like Puglian Primitivo Passito, usually do it for me as they always go very well with chocolates.

Fruits

When you keep consuming tiramisu, over time, the need to spice up the taste will arrive. What other perfect condiments go well with tiramisu besides fruits? Fruits like pineapples, raspberry fruits and jam, lemon, orange, plum, and peaches

Since tiramisu isn’t all that healthy, pairing it with these fruits will make it a beneficial treat. Besides sprinkling, these fruits have their own recipes where tiramisu is immersed in them. You could always look that up whenever you need to indulge.

This Easy to make gluten-free tiramisu recipe is just as splendid as the traditional recipe and I am sure it is going to please your taste buds in dimensions you wont be able to explain.

Does Tiramisu Have Alcohol In It?

Traditional tiramisu contains alcohol as the ladyfingers are soaked or brushed in a mixture of liquors like marsala wine or rum and coffee. It is still possible to make tiramisu without alcohol by just soaking or brushing the ladyfinger in the coffee.

Why Is Tiramisu So Expensive?

The mascarpone used in layering the cake is way pricey, and the cost of quality ladyfingers and a high-grade cocoa powder contributes to the expensive nature of tiramisu.

Is Tiramisu Halal?

Tiramisu is halal as it contains bovine gelatin, and most of its recipes call for the use of Marsala wine, which is haram.

Final Thoughts

Tiramisu is a treat you will always love to try again, but unfortunately, it is not gluten-free. That doesn’t stop you from enjoying this elegant treat, as you could make use of an alternative to ladyfingers, which is the major gluten source.

Dealing with diet restrictions should never stop your fun; there is always a way around every ingredient, and we will always help you find it.

Is Jiffy Cornbread Mix Gluten Free? Vegan? Healthy?

0
Is Jiffy Cornbread Mix Gluten Free?

How else do you start a beautiful, work-free Saturday morning? I love to grill and bake, and my whole family loves it. We have all gotten used to trying out as many recipes as possible including the delicious Panna Cotta dessert, and my little boy already knows how to bake!

Nothing compares to the aroma of a batch of freshly baked Jiffy cornbread, but is it gluten-free? In this article, we are going to explore Jiffy cornbread mix, its gluten, vegan, and FOODMAP status, possible health benefits and risks, and finally, we will give you a Jiffy cornbread gluten-free recipe.

Is Jiffy Cornbread Healthy?

Traditional Jiffy Mix is not healthy as it embodies lots of calories, sugar, and fats. It is a junk food whose negligible benefits are outweighed by the possible dangers of weight gain, diabetes, and obesity over time.

However, Jiffy’s cornbread can be more than just a portion of junk food. It could be a symbol of celebration and joy and an ultimate way to get your household bonded (if you bake together).

Is Jiffy Cornbread Mix Gluten Free?

Jiffy Cornbread Mix contains wheat, which means it is not gluten-free. Chelsea Milling Co., the company behind Jiffy Mixes, explicitly states on its website that its facility does not support the production of gluten-free mixes.

What Is in Jiffy Cornbread Mix?

Ingredient Gluten Status
Wheat Flour Contains gluten
Degerminated yellow corn meal Generally gluten-free, but cross-contamination may occur.
Sugar Generally gluten-free
Animal Shortening Gluten-free
Baking Soda Generally gluten-free
Sodium Pyrophosphate Generally gluten-free
Monocalcium Phosphate Generally gluten-free

Is Jiffy Vegetarian Cornbread Mix Gluten Free?

The difference between a jiffy cornbread mix and a jiffy vegetarian cornbread mix is the shortening. Vegetable shortening is the process of adding hydrogen to vegetable oil, which transforms the oil into a solid fat, giving the resulting product a creamy, smooth texture. It contributes to the flakiness and tenderness of baked goods. You should be aware that hydrogenated oil comes with higher trans fat.

Jiffy vegetarian cornbread mix is formulated without the inclusion of animal products but is not gluten-free as it is made with wheat flour.

Is Jiffy Cornbread Muffin Mix Gluten Free?

The Jiffy Cornbread Muffin Mix purchased from stores is not gluten-free as it contains wheat flour. However, if you want to enjoy this muffin without having to deal with gluten, you can purchase from other brands that make gluten-free muffin mixes, and we will list them later in the article.

Is Jiffy Cornbread Bad For You?

Jiffy cornbread can be bad for you for many reasons. Firstly, some of the mixes contain hydrogenated vegetable shortening, which contributes to trans fats. Taking lots of trans fat could lead to heart disease. The vegetable shortening is peculiar to their vegetarian mix.

While Jiffy cornbread mix provides carbohydrates that could energize you and certain vitamins and minerals like phosphorus, selenium, thiamin, and riboflavin obtained from cornmeal, sugar, wheat flour, and other ingredients, it lacks the fiber, minerals, and vitamins found in whole grains.

Is Jiffy Cornbread vegan?

Jiffy cornbread is not vegan as it embodies lard, a clarified fat obtained from a pig’s belly. Some of the mixes may also contain butter, milk, or eggs.

However, they have a mix made especially for vegans that uses vegetable shortening instead of butter and the like. It is equally free from milk, eggs, or any animal by-products.

Is Jiffy Cornbread Keto Friendly?

Jiffy cornbread is not keto-friendly; it has a high carbohydrate content and will be detrimental to you if you’re on a keto diet. The mix contains sugar and enriched wheat flour, which are parallel with the macronutrient composition of a keto diet.

Is Jiffy Cornbread Good For Diabetics?

Jiffy cornbread is not good for diabetics as it is capable of raising your sugar levels since it is made with a significant amount of carbohydrates. If you must consume at all, you should only have a small portion. You can equally consider making your cornbread at home using low-carb flour like coconut flour or almond flour.

Is Jiffy Cornbread Low Fodmap?

Jiffy cornbread is not low-FODMAP as it contains enriched wheat flour; wheat does contain fructans, which is a type of oligosaccharide that can stir up symptoms in individuals sensitive to FODMAPs, making Jiffy cornbread mix not suitable for a low-FODMAP diet.

Brands that offer Gluten free and Vegan cornbread mixes

These brands sell gluten-free cornbread mixes that I use without any problems:

Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Cornbread Mix

The Bob’s Red Mill mix is gluten-free and vegan. However, the recipe for baking this mix requires you to use some eggs, but in place of eggs, you could just use a flax egg if you are chasing down a vegan cornbread.
